Program Information
The pre-competitive program is designed to introduce swimmer to the swim club environment and the sport of speed swimming. Swimmers will attend practices approximately 1-4 times per week for between 30-60 minutes per session depending on the program. Swimmers will be taught various skills and swim strokes to help develop their knowledge, fitness, and understanding of swimming. Before transitioning from the pre-competitive to competitive program swimmers will have knowledge of freestyle, backstroke, breath control, streamline, entries, and turns. Swimmers will also have the opportunity to experience a swim competitions and are encouraged to participate in the Orca Splash events (unsanctioned, fun competitions that introduce the sounds and process of a competition). The goal is to allow swimmers to experience competition and prepare them for when the choose to transition into the competitive program.
The competitive program builds on the foundations of speed swimming and the excitement of competition. Swimmers attend practice 2-5 times per week for 45-90 minutes per session. This program is designed for swimmers who are comfortable in the water and capable of swimming at least 25m (one length of the pool). The goal of this program is to build endurance and fine tune their swim skills which can help them build confidence in the water, prepare them for junior lifeguard and Bronze lifesaving programs, and support their physical strength and endurance for other sports. This program is designed for swimmers who are more serious about swimming and for those who have identified swimming as their main sport. Many of these swimmers will attend competitions locally, provincially, and/or nationally however attendance at competitions is not required.
